Founded in 1777, the Mission Santa Clara de Asis is the first mission to be named for a woman in California. After the Jesuits took over the mission in 1850, a college (which would later become Santa Clara University) was built making it the only mission to become part of a university. Following a fire which nearly destoyed the entire structure, the site was almost completely rebuilt in 1925. Located on the north side of Santa Clara University, the mission is adjacent to El Camino Real.
